V. Where to buy AIS SIM cards and eSIMs for tourists

1. Buy AIS SIM cards

You can buy AIS SIM cards after arriving in Thailand at the airports, in AIS shops or convenience stores.

  • Airports: Major hubs like Suvarnabhumi International Airport (between gates 6 and 7), Don Muang Airport (Arrivals Hall 1, 1st Floor, Exit 2), and Phuket Airport (1st Floor, International Hall).
  • AIS Shops: SIM cards by AIS are found in malls, retail stores, and popular tourist areas across Thailand.
  • Convenience Stores: FamilyMart, 7-Eleven, and other mobile retailers also offer SIM card plans for tourists from AIS mobile operator..

However, when buying SIM cards in Thailand, from any mobile operator, you need to show a passport for registration. This is inconvenient for most tourists. So we DO NOT RECOMMEND this way.

2. Buy AIS eSIMs

Similar to buying physical AIS SIM cards in Thailand, you also need to present your personal documents like passport for registration if buying the eSIM directly from the AIS operator (through official stores or websites of AIS).

If you want a simpler purchase procedure, buy eSIM for Thailand from third parties like Gigago.com which not only offer competitive prices and more data options, but also do not require any documents when purchasing.

Though the overall performance of DTAC is not as good as AIS, if you travel to major cities in Thailand, the performance between two carriers are not different while the prices are more affordable.

You only need to give an active email address for receiving eSIM information. Things are done in 5-10 minutes.

VI. Calls and SMS rates of AIS in Thailand

  • Calls to AIS numbers cost 1 Baht/minute (standard rate).
  • SMS rates are 3 Baht/SMS for domestic messages and 5 Baht/SMS for international ones.
  • Internet rates cost 1 Baht/MB for data usage without a package (pay-as-you-go services).

These rates provide flexibility, but for cost savings, AIS recommends selecting one of their prepaid or postpaid packages tailored to your needs.
